"Wobbles the Mind" (wobblesthemind)

There is just something about the Saturn Vues with the 250 hp Honda 3.5L V6 (J35A3) that makes me want to drive them. Toss in how JDM the early first generation Saturn Vue Redlines were, plus the relative rarity and my weirdo want-o-meter starts kicking up like crazy.
I also think an Ion Redline would be a hoot to toss around. Both the Vue and Ion had the white backing for the gauges but the Ion had that centralized instrument cluster.
Wait a moment, is this an Ion Redline with the Competition Package? There’s no way that boost gauge has...
SHIFT LIGHTS!!
Ferrari be damned, my inner child is hitting puberty harder than any rev limiter!
Hmm, the comp pack has an LSD so might as well find the factory tuning kits and take this 205 hp car to a 236 hp Stage 1 car or a 241 hp Stage 2 car. Still technically stock so I can keep my khaki wearing cubicle-goer persona when I pull up next to a new Civic Si!
“My Saturn is quick enough to come for Uranus, brah!” Note that I would never yell that out because I’m cooler than Coltrane’s smoking penguin. You all know this, man! All in a Gundam Saturn Ion...
But obviously the real gem is, and will always be, the Saturn Sky Redline.
Yes, you can have a 260 hp turbo 4-cyl but why not take advantage of that GM turbo kit and pop it up to 290 hp and 325-340 lb-ft of torque? Or just toss an LS in it, whatever...
All fun and games aside, I have been itching for a Saturn Sky for a few years now. One day I’ll have enough for a first gen Infiniti FX, a Saturn Sky, and a few other odd ownership wants I need to get out of my system. Actually a clean Sky, an FX, and my Amanti might be a surprisingly nice garage...

Too bad the Honda trans in the Vue Redline was made of glass.

Well this post started off as an “Automotive Reminder” about the Honda V6 in the Saturn Vue but I got lost inside my mind as usual...

Too bad the Vue was made to be a piece of shit. My friend has one, interior is garbage, drives like crap, falls apart like you would expect.
Now a Sky Redline, there we are talking the same language.

I thought the V6 cars were solid? I know that the CVT in the 4-cyl was so bad that it got cancelled faster than an early FOX sitcom.

I had a VUE Redline....that Honda V6 is so silky smooth. Too bad the rest of it was simply a VUE. Looked good though.

Hmm, maybe I should still write out an Automotive Reminder for that since I haven’t written one in months.

The Sky is neat but has some dramatic shortcomings. More squeaks and rattles than my Miata, feels more cramped (though there is more leg/headroom), less trunk space, blah blah blah. I wouldn’t mind a Redline though. They look stunning.

Well, Honda V6, so that’s a known good. But the trans were either the Honda or Aisin units. So, not good.

More credit needs to be given to how great the Redline badge was.

I drove a Vue, it was decent but the steering in that thing was utter garbage, I really thought I was driving a kids plastic car with the way that thing drove

I have a Saturn Vue and I absolutely love it! I’m so disappointed that they aren’t made anymore. This is the first vehicle that I haven’t wanted to get rid of...had her now for 10 years.

The Honda V6 / Transmission drivetrain in the Vue was part of a trade with GM for Isuzu Diesel motors.
The issue with the Honda transmissions during this time was a bad routing of a oil line that caused lubrication starvation, the transmission itself was fine assuming it got fluid.

Transmissions were actually solid, the issue was fluid starvation due to a faulty routing of the oil lines.

Desperately craving 3 pedals because I own 2 autos, I stumbled across this Saturn on cg. Turns out the guy hated the fact this ‘Saturn’ took 7 quarts of oil , premium gas ,and kept going into limp mode. Turned out to be a ion redline. Paid $900 for it. 2 cans of seafoam, boost bypass , 2 tires and air filter later it runs awesome. Come to find out it was a down south dealer maintained car with headers. 10,000 miles later it serves well as a commuter with ample power and great handling. Interior is well.. you know. Recaros are the best thing. Sketchiest cg purchase ever.

Give me a Sky Redline, I’ll pass on the rest. I’ve thought about buying a Ion Redline before, but the absolute crap interior, combined tasteless mods most of them have I let that idea pass.

Having worked at a Saturn dealer when the ION Redline came out and also having installed a stage two kit, don’t do it unless it’s main use is a track toy. It’ll blister the tires until third gear. It’s basically undriveable unless you have some serious tires under it.
